Swedish government offices will block direct access to ChatGPT and Cloud on employees' work computers, with the restriction taking effect from Monday. Direct access to ChatGPT and Cloud will be blocked on employees' work computers from Monday.

The move will not remove all ways for agencies to use the technology. Organisation-approved methods for using these services will remain available, and some staff will keep access to the two chatbots through internal systems developed inside individual agencies, according to Sveriges Radio.

Sveriges Radio reports that employees are being steered toward approved alternatives, including Copilot. Officials say the decision is driven by concerns about information security and the use of services without formal agreements in place. Mikael Vetterkrantz, the director for digitalisation, stressed in an internal memo that these concerns must be addressed, and he declined to be interviewed about the decision.

Security reviews and the national AI strategy

The Swedish Government Communications Office says it has strengthened Copilot's protective measures following security reviews, but it will not disclose technical details of those changes for security reasons. The office's account of tightened safeguards underlines that the new workplace restriction is an administrative control rather than a halt to national AI efforts.

Sweden's national AI strategy, drawn up in early 2026 with the aim of placing the country among the leaders in the field, remains in place.
