Volkswagen of America has informed U.S. dealers that the ID. Buzz will skip the 2027 model year and is now slated to return as a 2028 model in the first quarter of 2027, carrying a suite of both hardware and software changes.
The announcement marks a second postponement in under a year. Volkswagen Group had outlined several visible updates in May 2026, including physical steering-wheel buttons, a NACS charging adapter, a camping-oriented grade and bi-tone exterior paint options; those items are now confirmed to transfer to the 2028 models. Automotive News reports Volkswagen will publish further details in the coming months. No U.S. pricing or driving-range figures for the 2028 model have been released.
Tourer camper and hardware changes
Volkswagen previously withdrew the ID. Buzz from the 2026 model year in December 2025 while insisting the program was not cancelled. The Tourer camper variant survived that pause. Unveiled in May 2026 as part of the 2027 lineup, the factory Tourer is based on the Euro-market Good Night Package and adds a fold-out mattress and platform, front ventilation panels, an exterior table, window blinds and folding chairs. The package does not include a fridge or stove, but does add a retractable tow hitch, captain's chairs and an electronic panoramic sunroof.
Software, services and other promised features
Software work appears to be a central factor in the delay. The previously planned 2027 model was to run Volkswagen's ID.S 6 infotainment stack on Android Automotive OS, including an App Store, vehicle-to-load functionality, digital-key integration, one-pedal driving and a NACS adapter. Volkswagen confirmed earlier this week that AirConsole will ship in certain U.S. models with Tetris and 19 other titles playable while parked using smartphones as controllers. After the first year, AirConsole access will require purchase of the In-Vehicle Premium subscription, which currently retails at USD 149 per year.
Market performance has been modest. Volkswagen of America reported 6,140 ID. Buzz deliveries in 2025 and 2,481 in the first half of 2026. The vans are built in Germany and carry a higher price than some competitors, and U.S. import tariffs applied from spring 2025. Approximately 30 new units remain available nationwide, most finished in single-tone silver or black. The model holds the 2025 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award, and Volkswagen of America's CEO Kjell Gruner has said 2025 model-year stock should carry dealers through the transition to the 2028 models.
