Volkswagen unveiled the ID. Tiguan on 9 Oct 2026 at 11:34 UTC, presenting a renamed and substantially revised successor to the ID.4 and ID.5. The company says the model retains the MEB underpinnings in an updated form called MEB+ and will be offered in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive variants, with outputs up to 295 hp and WLTP ranges as high as 373 mi (600 km). The European commercial launch is set for early 2027; US specifications will follow.
The change is both a styling and positioning move. Volkswagen has tightened its naming strategy by giving the car a familiar nameplate, and it has applied more than a superficial facelift to the ID.4 package. The automaker has not called this a clean-sheet EV, but the MEB+ architecture brings a series of upgrades and refinements across the chassis, software and packaging.

On the outside the ID. Tiguan adopts a boxier, more conventional compact-SUV silhouette and the brand's Pure Positive design language shared with the ID. Polo and ID. Cross. Light bars run across the front and rear, and Volkswagen has replaced the ID.4's electrically operated pop-out door handles with conventional mechanical handles. A small front trunk adds 32 liters of stowage to the vehicle's 534-liter main luggage compartment.

Inside, Volkswagen has moved toward a screen-forward layout while restoring a number of physical controls. The dashboard features three displays: a 10-in instrument cluster, a 12-in co-driver display and a 15-in central infotainment screen, making this the first Volkswagen to include a passenger display. Traditional buttons remain for frequently used functions, and a Retro display mode reproduces a Golf IV-style blue-red theme, even showing a classic rev counter in the instrument graphics.

Volkswagen has disclosed the initial powertrain and battery options. The base rear-drive model develops 187 hp and pairs with a 58-kWh battery for up to 280 mi (450 km) WLTP. A longer-range 282-hp RWD version uses a 77-kWh battery and is rated at up to 373 mi (600 km) WLTP. The top all-wheel-drive configuration produces 295 hp on the same 77-kWh pack, with an official WLTP figure of 348 mi (560 km). Volkswagen says these are WLTP estimates; EPA figures for US-market cars will be announced next year.
Volkswagen plans the ID. Tiguan's commercial debut in Europe in early 2027, with US-specific details to come later. Pre-sales open in Germany and several other European countries on October 13, with prices starting at 42,695 euros (about $48,000). Published by Cristian Agatie on 9 Oct 2026, 11:34 UTC.
