VW Reveals ID.3 GTI: Most Powerful GTI, Rear-Wheel Drive

Volkswagen has introduced the ID.3 GTI, the model that replaces the ID.3 GTX and, according to the manufacturer, is both the most powerful GTI in Volkswagen history and the brand's first GTI with rear-wheel drive. The announcement was made in a Volkswagen press release published 16 September 2026.

Volkswagen says the ID.3 GTI pairs 326 ps (321 hp/240 kW) with 545 Nm (402 lb-ft) of torque, marking the model as the most potent GTI yet while switching to a rear-drive layout.

Performance, battery and driving systems

Volkswagen quotes output of 326 ps (321 hp/240 kW) and 545 Nm (402 lb-ft). The company states the car accelerates from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 5.6 seconds and is electronically limited to 200 kph (124 mph). A single 79 kWh battery pack feeds the drive motor and, per Volkswagen, can accept DC charging at up to 183 kW, taking roughly 29 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent. Range is estimated at up to 601 km (373 miles) on a full charge, a reported increase of 10 km compared with the outgoing ID.3 GTX.

Volkswagen also lists Launch Control among the features and highlights a DCC sports chassis that the company says helps to "create a new, pure, and dynamic GTI experience." Those items are presented as part of the car's performance package in the announcement.

Exterior, interior and equipment

The ID.3 GTI follows the ID.3 facelift's styling updates with a more aggressive front fascia, red accents, gloss-black trim and vertical LED daytime running lights. The GTI emblem appears on the front wings and tailgate, and a transparent light strip with an illuminated corporate logo runs between the IQ.Light LED matrix headlights. Unlike the GTX, which used black finishes on the roof, spoiler and tailgate, those panels on the GTI are finished in the same color as the body. Volkswagen lists standard 20-inch wheels and offers the car in black, red, white, silver and gray.

Inside the cabin, Volkswagen says the GTI returns to a greater number of physical controls compared with the GTX, including proper buttons on the steering wheel and a dedicated volume knob. The digital instrument cluster grows to 10.25 inches and is paired with a 12.9-inch infotainment screen; the touch slider beneath the main display has been removed in favor of conventional controls. A pair of bucket seats and red interior accents are standard, and the press release notes a vehicle-to-load function.

Optional equipment listed in the announcement includes massaging front seats, memory for the driver and front passenger seats, a large panoramic sunroof, a head-up display with augmented reality, a Harman Kardon premium sound system and a removable bracket that allows attaching a bicycle carrier to a trailer coupling.

Volkswagen describes a new GTI driving mode that is engaged via a button on the multifunction steering wheel; the company says the digital dials turn red and the cockpit adopts a sportier presentation. The manufacturer also mentions synthesized engine sound designed to emulate the character of a Golf GTI.

Volkswagen will open pre-sales in early 2027, with market-specific pricing and specifications to be confirmed later. The company indicates the ID.3 GTI will not launch in the United States; Volkswagen's ID.4 remains available in the US market with a starting MSRP of $45,095.
