Huawei is moving beyond China with its Ascend family of AI processors, targeting overseas markets starting with South Korea. The move aims to give local companies an alternative to Nvidia hardware while expanding Huawei's footprint in global AI infrastructure.
Cluster-based Ascend offerings that bundle hardware and services
Huawei, already the largest Chinese supplier of AI infrastructure, plans to introduce several Ascend models to Korean customers, including the Ascend 950 in two main configurations: 950PR and 950DT. The company has also shared specs for models such as 910C, Ascend 960 and 970 in official slides.
Unlike single-card sales common in some markets, Huawei says it will provide cluster-oriented solutions that include networking and storage layers. These end-to-end packages are designed as drop-in systems for enterprises that may not have access to Nvidia GPUs, and Huawei positions them as competitive alternatives to Nvidia's Rubin-based clusters.
Huawei expects to ship Ascend chips inside large-scale Atlas SuperPod-style clusters, with HBM memory integrated on both 950PR and 950DT variants. For Korean companies building AI services or research platforms, that could mean a ready-made on-premise stack instead of sourcing separate components from multiple vendors.

There are strategic questions as well. Nvidia's CEO has warned that firms like Huawei could replicate the global expansion approach they used in 5G, now applied to AI — a coordinated push that blends hardware, software and follow-up services. The broader concern is whether Huawei can scale production fast enough to meet global demand beyond China.
For now, Huawei's plan highlights two themes: the rise of homegrown AI silicon in China after restrictions limited Nvidia gear, and a renewed competition for markets such as South Korea that host major semiconductor and AI adopters. The coming months will show if Ascend clusters win traction among customers seeking alternatives, and how geopolitics and export controls shape adoption.
