Apple will enable Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo with iOS 27.2 next week, days after the foldable begins shipping on Friday, October 23. The initial shipping units run iOS 27.1 and will require the 27.2 update to accept a stylus.
Rollout schedule and system update
The iPhone Duo starts shipping on Friday, October 23 on iOS 27.1, and Apple Pencil will not work at launch. According to 9to5Mac and analyst Max Weinbach, full Apple Pencil support is present in the iOS 27.2 Release Candidate that began rolling out this week. The public release of iOS 27.2 is expected to arrive around Monday, October 26.
Apple Pencil compatibility and pairing
Support is limited to the Apple Pencil that uses USB-C; the Apple Pencil Pro and older Lightning models are not compatible with the Duo. The USB-C Pencil pairs and charges with a cable rather than snapping on magnetically, which reflects that the Duo does not include a convenient magnetic attachment point for the Pencil Pro.

Functionality demonstrated in the release candidate
People running the 27.2 Release Candidate already have stylus support. Weinbach reported and demonstrated the Pencil working on his unit after installing the candidate, with the stylus functioning on both the inner and outer displays. Specifically, Apple Pencil activity observed in the RC includes:
- drawing,
- annotating,
- navigation across both displays.
Availability and demand
This is the first iPhone to support Apple Pencil. For customers who receive a Duo on day one and update promptly to iOS 27.2, stylus support should arrive within a few days. Pre-orders were intense, and many buyers are seeing delivery windows that extend into 2027.
