A leaked thread of internal emails read like a quiet victory lap. While other parts of Xbox were reporting soft numbers, Blizzard Entertainment was quietly climbing to the top of the financial leaderboard.
Executives, alerted by the numbers, sent messages that underlined an unlikely turnaround. Johanna Farez, Blizzard's president, told staff that the studio closed fiscal 2026 as the top-performing studio within Xbox and that last year marked Blizzard's third-best fiscal year by gross revenue in the company's history.
The two titles that changed the trajectory
How did this happen? Two games. Two big course corrections. Overwatch, after shedding the "2" from its title and undergoing significant structural changes, returned with ten new heroes and a stream of updates that reignited player interest. The result: the strongest quarter for Overwatch since 2022.
At the same time, Diablo 4 found new life with the Lord of Hatred expansion. New classes, fresh regions to explore, and content that kept players engaged helped push Blizzard's revenue higher. The combined momentum from these releases turned what had been a long period of stagnation into Blizzard's first back-to-back growth years since 2017—fiscal 2025 and 2026.
Blizzard is now Xbox's most profitable studio, and the company sees this as a springboard into a new chapter of creativity and community.
Farez framed the achievement as more than numbers. In her note she said the success should shine a light on work already underway at Blizzard and act as a launchpad into a new era of energy and excitement, tied to the studio's mission of creating joy and belonging for players worldwide.
The timing is complicated. Microsoft is moving ahead with large-scale workforce reductions, a plan that includes about 3,200 job cuts across the company. That decision has drawn criticism from developers and stoked unease throughout Xbox's studio ecosystem, even as Blizzard posts gains.
For observers, Blizzard's rebound reads like a reminder that in games, a well-executed update or expansion can shift fortunes fast. For Blizzard, the challenge now is clear: turn momentum into sustainable growth while navigating the broader uncertainty inside Microsoft.
