Imagine unfolding a phone twice and watching it flip from pocket-friendly to tablet-size in a heartbeat. Huawei's next bold move, the Mate XT 2 tri-fold, is already teasing that exact moment — and pre-orders have quietly gone live in China ahead of its official reveal.
Available colors are straightforward: Dark Black, Pure White and Jin Purple, the last name lifted from the Chinese label and translated literally. Memory choices lean heavy on high capacity. Buyers can pick between 16GB of RAM with either 512GB or 1TB of storage. There’s also a privacy matte display variant that pairs 16GB of memory with 1TB of space, and a top-tier 16GB/2TB configuration that ships with a stylus for creatives on the go.

Design that folds in, not out
Look closely at the preview shots Huawei published and one detail stands out: an octagonal rear camera module that echoes the original Mate XT. It’s a distinctive touch. But the folding mechanism has switched strategies. Where earlier models used an outward-folding construction, the Mate XT 2 moves to an inward-folding layout and adds a cover display. That makes it feel more like a pocketable phone that expands into a workspace, rather than a rigid tablet that folds flat.

Huawei has also rolled out short videos showcasing the device from multiple angles, capturing the hinge action and the cover screen’s behavior. The clips double as a feature run-through: multitasking across panels, stylus responsiveness for the 2TB bundle, and the privacy matte option that reduces onlookers’ visibility.
Under the hood, the Mate XT 2 is expected to pack a Kirin 9050 Pro chipset and a hefty 6,000mAh battery. Early reports link the camera setup to the Mate X7, suggesting Huawei hasn’t compromised on photography despite the complex folding frame. In short: power, endurance and optics that should keep pace with flagship rivals.

No official global pricing has been announced yet, and the company is keeping international availability close to the vest. But if you’re in China and curious, pre-orders are active now as Huawei counts down to the September 7 launch.
Will the tri-fold design find a wider audience? That remains to be seen. For now, Huawei is betting on premium hardware, big memory options and a more pocket-friendly inward fold to sway adventurous buyers.
