Xiaomi Poised to Debut Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 First

Picture a crowded keynote hall in late September: phones gleam under spotlights, engineers breathe a sigh of relief, and one brand quietly aims to cross the tape first. That brand might be Xiaomi.

What Xiaomi is betting on

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit runs from September 22 to 24, and this year it is expected to unveil two flavors of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Manufacturers are already lining up to launch flagships that month. Xiaomi, vivo and Oppo are in the mix, but the latest whispers point to Xiaomi taking an early lead.

The Xiaomi 18 family appears to be a three-phone strategy. At the top sits the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max, reportedly packing two 200MP rear cameras with a 1/1.28-inch LOFIC sensor handling the main shots. The Xiaomi 18 Pro may lean into unique hardware touches: a larger rear display and a possible Privacy Display feature aimed at users who want information where others can’t peek. The standard Xiaomi 18 is said to be a touch bigger than its predecessor with a 6.4-inch screen and a hefty 7,200mAh battery that promises marathon-level endurance.

Under the hood the story is about silicon. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and its Elite Gen 6 Pro sibling are tipped to be built on a 2nm process, though reports disagree on whether Samsung or TSMC will handle the wafers. Both chips will use next-generation Oryon CPU cores in a 2+3+3 cluster. The regular Elite should arrive with an Adreno 845 GPU paired with 12MB of on-chip graphics memory plus 6MB of last-level cache. The Elite Pro, aimed at the highest performance bracket, is said to sport an Adreno 850, 18MB of on-chip graphics memory and 8MB of last-level cache. Qualcomm is also expected to keep a non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 variant in the pipeline.

Price is the blunt instrument shaping Xiaomi’s lineup. Early figures place the Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset at about €280. That premium makes it likely only the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max — and perhaps a later Xiaomi 18 Ultra — will receive the Elite Pro silicon, while the Xiaomi 18 and 18 Pro would settle for the standard Elite.

If the rumors hold, Xiaomi aims to be the first brand shipping phones with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 silicon in September.

The launch cadence looks staggered: Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are expected in September to stake that first-to-market claim, while the smaller Xiaomi 18 could slip into October. If this pans out, it would echo last year, when the Xiaomi 17 series became the first to ship devices with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
