Claude Projects redesign adds shared memory and threads

Anthropic has redesigned the Projects feature in Claude Code to move beyond a simple folder structure toward a collaborative, long‑running environment that splits work across concurrent threads and builds a shared project memory.

According to Anthropic's press release, the new Projects experience is rolling out in beta today inside Claude Code for some Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers who use cloud sessions, with a gradual wider release and a waitlist option.

How Projects works

The redesign replaces a static, folderlike space with a coordinator plus multiple worker threads. Users define the overall goal and attach a code repository or other context; Claude then proposes which subtasks it can take on immediately, dispatches those subtasks to parallel threads, evaluates interim outputs and assembles the final result. In this context, "threads" are separate Claude Code sessions that run parts of the work concurrently, while the coordinator routes progress and maintains overall direction.

Anthropic also built a shared memory layer. Over time Claude accumulates project details and reuses them in later tasks: each thread appends to and reads from the common memory so the system can recall specifics such as moving a release date to Friday or the reason a prior output was removed. The intention is to reduce the need for complex prompt engineering by preserving project history across interactions.

The update adds controls over communication and behavior. Users can ask Claude to change check‑in frequency, adjust how many new threads are spawned or set the level of detail in updates. A project library gathers uploaded files and artifacts Claude produces, making it easier to find relevant materials and build new work from previous efforts.

Limits and administrative controls

Anthropic warns that the new architecture makes usage limits more consequential. Because each worker thread runs as a full Claude Code session, projects that run multiple threads simultaneously may consume quota faster. Anthropic says users will be able to inspect per‑project consumption and select both the model and the effort level for the coordinator and for individual worker threads.

The company framed the change as an attempt to turn Projects into an environment for conversation, task division and long‑term tracking rather than a simple storage area, with the beta rollout starting today for eligible Claude Pro and Claude Max cloud‑session users and a gradual expansion to others.
