Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design: Kirin 9050 Pro Tri-Fold

Open it and the room changes. A compact slab becomes a near-tablet, the sort of transformation that still feels a little like magic — only this time Huawei wants it to be practical, not just showy.

The Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design is the company’s latest stab at the tri-fold form factor, and it arrives with a handful of refinements that matter: a new inward-folding hinge geometry, a beefy Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, and a battery sized for real use.

Small outside. Monumental inside.

The outside shell houses a 6.5-inch OLED LTPO cover screen. It runs at Full-HD+ resolution, refreshes at 120Hz, and peaks at a blistering 6,500 nits for outdoor visibility. Unfold and you get a 10.2-inch OLED inner display that leans toward productivity with a 3K resolution and a 12.8:9 aspect ratio. That internal panel uses LTPO tech for variable refresh and includes a hardware privacy layer similar to what we saw on flagship devices from other makers.

Huawei claims the new Kirin 9050 Pro delivers roughly 42 percent more CPU performance than the chipset in last year’s Mate XTs, and it has upgraded NPU and GPU blocks to match. The result is a device that can handle multitasking across three panes without feeling fragile.

Cameras get a rethink too. Instead of a side-mounted module, the rear array sits centered on the middle panel. The trio includes a 50MP RYYB LOFIC main sensor with a 1/1.28-inch size, a 50MP RYYB periscope telephoto with about 3.5x optical zoom, and a 40MP RYYB ultrawide. Huawei also highlights a third-generation Red Maple color sensor for richer tones. Selfie needs are covered by 8MP cameras on both the inner and cover displays.

The hardware is thoughtful: a new G-shaped hinge, a basalt glass cover screen for improved drop and scratch resistance, and IP58/IP59 ingress protection ratings. Thin when unfolded at 3.5mm, it still folds to a usable 12.3mm and tips the scales at 299g. For input, the phone supports M-Pen 3 and keeps a side-mounted fingerprint scanner plus capacitive edge buttons that can even record ECG data.

Charging is competitive. The 5,600mAh cell supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless top-up. Connectivity covers modern essentials: 5G, dual 4G fallback, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 LE, GNSS, satellite communication, NFC, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port.

Who should care? If you want a foldable that behaves like a daily driver—work, media, note-taking—this is a contender. It weighs less than many tablets and feels more robust than earlier tri-fold attempts. Pricing starts at about €2,600 for the 16GB/256GB model and climbs to around €3,900 for the 16GB/2TB special edition that includes a stylus.

Huawei has not just pushed specs here; it nudged the design and materials conversation forward. Whether that’s enough to sway buyers who still worry about longevity and software ecosystems will depend on the broader market, but as a statement of engineering intent, the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design is hard to ignore.
