Inside Xiaomi's 18 Fold: Red, Rounded and Ready at IFA 2026

Bright red stopped me in my tracks behind the glass at IFA 2026. No handshake, no demo loop, just a phone sitting like a jewel in a case. It looked louder in person than any press render had suggested.

The 18 Fold leans into the compact passport shape popularized by Samsung's Z Fold8, but Xiaomi has softened the angles. Corners curve where other devices keep theirs sharp, which promises a gentler feel when you cradle it for long stretches. That might sound trivial. It changes the way the phone reads in your palm.

A familiar fold, softened at the edges

The outer screen measures roughly 5.38 inches and presents an odd little personality quirk: one side sits more squared off while the opposite corner rounds—an effect born from those gentler corners. The main interior display stretches to about 7.58 inches, and from most angles the crease was hard to spot. The selfie punch hole nests in the top right of the inner panel. Tactile impressions are missing because the unit stayed behind glass. Still, the visual cues are telling.

Camera hardware wears a visor-style island on the back. I counted three lenses and expect a standard trio: main, telephoto and ultrawide. There’s a second front-facing camera on the cover screen as well, giving you options for quick selfies without opening the book.

Xiaomi confirmed the phone runs on its in-house Xring O3 chipset. It’s an important detail because custom silicon lets the company tune performance and efficiency to the foldable’s unique demands. Will it deliver flag-level speed? Early indicators look promising but the full story waits until we benchmark a retail unit.

This could be Xiaomi's most approachable foldable yet.

Details remain thin ahead of the official launch next week. We’ll test the hinge, probe battery life and push the Xring O3 through real-world workloads once we get a hold of a review unit. For now, the 18 Fold’s color, shape and discreet display treatment are the parts that linger in the memory.
