Amodei Says AI Development Must Slow; Altman, Musk Agree

Dario Amodei, chief executive of Anthropic, urged AI companies to slow the pace at which model capabilities are improved, writing in a public note that the industry must reduce the speed of development.

Amodei's call revived the industry debate over speed versus safety and drew unexpected public backing from two prominent figures in AI: Sam Altman and Elon Musk.

Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, posted on X that he agrees with Amodei's position. Altman said OpenAI leaders have held extensive discussions in recent weeks and indicated support for the idea of independent evaluators who would have access similar to that of employees.

Elon Musk also weighed in on X, posting the succinct endorsement "Dario is right."

Amodei's note appeared as public concern about the prospects of far more capable or self-improving systems has been rising. The remark is notable for coming from the head of a leading AI company rather than an external critic.

The exchanges follow the departure of Jacob Coxon, a researcher who moved from OpenAI to Anthropic and has now left the AI industry entirely. Coxon publicly accused two companies competing to develop self-improving AI of gambling with human lives.

Amodei's message, and the endorsements from Altman and Musk on X, keep the debate over how quickly to push AI capabilities squarely in public view.
