Apple's Foldable iPhone Ultra: MagSafe, Size and Hinge

Imagine unfolding a phone and feeling that tiny magnetic click you rely on every night. Familiar. Welcome. That expectation is at the center of the latest gossip about Apple’s first foldable, reportedly called the iPhone Ultra.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman told Tom’s Guide that MagSafe support is likely baked into the device, even though early leaked renders and dummy units don’t show the telltale magnetic ring. Skepticism followed. Easy to understand. Apple has a habit of keeping its engineering secrets close and its product finishes closer.

Expect MagSafe support, even if the leaked dummies hide the signature ring.

Small design, big engineering choices

Gurman’s rationale is pragmatic. If Apple squeezed MagSafe into the wafer-thin iPhone Air, folding engineering won’t necessarily be a deal-breaker. Rumors peg the Ultra at just 4.5mm when unfolded. That’s slim. Very slim. It forces tradeoffs, sure. But it also shows Apple is chasing a particular aesthetic: pocketable yet premium.

The rumored screen layout reads like a compromise tuned for practicality. A 5.5-inch cover display for quick tasks. A 7.8-inch flexible inner display for work, streaming, and gaming, with a crease reportedly less obvious than the one on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8. That comparison matters because crease visibility is one of the first things consumers notice when deciding whether a foldable feels finished or fragile.
