ChatGPT Search Volume Hits 20% of Google's Queries

OpenAI says searches conducted through ChatGPT now total about 20 percent of Google’s search volume. The company defines which interactions qualify as searches, uses Bing and its own index, and is expanding ads ahead of a likely IPO.

OpenAI says searches routed through ChatGPT now equal roughly 20 percent of Google’s search volume.

The figure, disclosed by OpenAI and described by Adam Fry, ChatGPT's consumer product lead, applies only to user requests that the company counts as a "search," meaning interactions that trigger a web search; simple definitions and basic how-to explanations are excluded. Fry did not specify the source OpenAI used to quantify Google’s total search volume.

The 20 percent figure signals a significant shift but remains short of overtaking Google. Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella testified during the 2023 antitrust trial that Bing captured about 3 percent of search market share after more than a decade of effort; that comparison has been cited in discussions about whether generative AI can disrupt incumbent search engines.

OpenAI’s search traffic is not sourced from a single index. The company likely relies in part on Microsoft Bing for query results while also employing its own search index, and some industry observers have speculated that a portion of requests may still pass through Google-based routes. OpenAI has not provided a definitive breakdown of how queries are resolved.

These developments arrive amid broader changes in how major search providers display results. Google has been progressively reducing traditional links to external sites and expanding AI-driven features, including an AI Overview and newer generative capabilities that offer personalized results with imagery and charts. At the same time, other companies and research labs are investing in chat-style, AI-based search experiences; OpenAI refers to its integrated, interactive approach as an Intelligent UI.

Advertising and monetization

OpenAI is pursuing advertising as a path toward profitability. The company’s interest in ad formats has grown as it prepares for an initial public offering that sources indicate is likely planned for early next year. Fry told reporters that ads in ChatGPT have not provoked lasting negative reactions and that "it seems most people do not mind the presence of ads in the product."

Last month OpenAI began showing images of sponsored products and services inside ChatGPT responses; previously ads were limited to the advertiser's name, logo and a link. Fry added, "Advertising may have shown us that we can actually do more in this area."

OpenAI’s characterization of what counts as a search, and its choice not to disclose the data sources behind the Google comparison, leave open questions about how the 20 percent metric maps to traditional search-market measurements.
