When ChatGPT first began showing sponsored suggestions, many assumed it would be a minor experiment. Not anymore. OpenAI now says its advertising arm is running at an annualized €930 million, a figure that reads less like an experiment and more like a new business line.
The ads program is still young. Roughly 200 days have passed since OpenAI launched its test in the United States. Yet in that short span the company has woven advertising into a portfolio that already includes enterprise deals, individual subscriptions, and API revenue. The timing matters. OpenAI is expanding ad reach while preparing the company for a public offering.
A faster lane for advertisers
Why did ad spend climb so quickly? Accessibility. Ads Manager, the self-serve tool OpenAI first rolled out in the United States, is now open to advertisers in India, much of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. That move puts ChatGPT ads in over 40 countries, widening the potential pool of buyers and making it easier for smaller advertisers to join the platform.
Small and medium sized businesses have been particularly important. OpenAI says these companies now make up a substantial slice of ad customers. In plain terms: local shops and regional brands are discovering they can reach ChatGPT users without a big media buy. That expands the base of advertisers in a way large deals alone could not.

There is an earlier benchmark worth noting. Six weeks after OpenAI began ad testing in the US, annualized ad revenue passed about €93 million. The climb from that milestone to €930 million suggests a rapid scaling curve driven by product access and geographic rollout rather than a few headline campaigns.
Ads appear to free users and those on the lower-cost Go plan. OpenAI emphasizes that sponsored content will be clearly labeled and that ad placements will not alter the substantive responses the model provides. Advertisers, the company adds, do not get access to users' private conversations.
That reassurance is meant to address a core tension. How do you monetize a conversational AI without eroding trust? Labeling helps. Privacy guards help. But the real test will be whether ad relevance and user experience can coexist at scale.
For marketers, ChatGPT offers a different inventory compared with search or social. It is contextual, driven by conversation prompts, and present at moments when users ask for recommendations, summaries, or product details. That makes the placement strategic rather than purely impression based. For OpenAI, it means a path to diversify revenue beyond subscriptions and enterprise contracts.
What comes next is predictable and not. Expect Ads Manager refinements, more market expansions, and new creative formats geared to conversation. Expect scrutiny from regulators and users who watch how ads intersect with personalization and data.
OpenAI's move shows how quickly advertising can scale inside a popular AI interface, but the company will need steady product work and clear guardrails to keep growth sustainable.

Is that €930m real or inflated? Seems crazy fast, regulators will have a field day. Also curious how this affects free users' experience...
wow didn't expect ChatGPT ads to balloon so fast, kinda cool but also kinda creepy. If they keep it clear and private maybe ok, but trust is fragile
