Open a spreadsheet with one wrong cell and the anxiety sneaks in. A single misplaced parenthesis. A VLOOKUP that returns nothing. You can now ask Gemini to handle that frustration for you.

One click to diagnose and repair

Google is rolling out an update to Gemini inside Google Sheets that spots and repairs formula errors with a click, provided your Workspace admin has switched on the Gemini for Workspace setting. The feature ranges from fixing simple arithmetic mistakes to untangling nested, complex calculations. Think of it as a built-in troubleshoot button for formulas.

Want to build a formula from scratch? Open a spreadsheet on your computer, click Ask Gemini in the top-right corner, or type an equals sign into a cell and use the shortcut keys: Ctrl + Alt + G on Windows and ChromeOS, or Command + Ctrl + G on macOS. Then write a plain-language prompt. Ask Gemini to divide the number of goals by games, or to search for cell C1 across columns D to G. Short, natural prompts. Human language. Fast results.

If a generated formula fails, or one you wrote throws an error, debugging happens inside the sheet. Hover over the error cell and click Fix. That action opens the side panel, where Gemini parses your data layout, diagnoses the issue, and applies corrections automatically when ready. You can stop the process anytime by hitting Stop in the side panel.

This update arrives about two years after Google first added Gemini-powered formula generation to Sheets. The company has been quietly moving AI features out of optional side panels and directly into cells. Last year, Google introduced the =AI() function so users could run translation and text-generation tasks right inside cells without leaving the grid.

It’s not magic. But it’s close. For teams drowning in spreadsheets, Gemini’s smarter error handling could shave minutes—or hours—off routine cleanup. And when the admin flips the switch, Sheets will feel noticeably less like a trap and more like a coauthor.
