Google Translate Upgrades Live Translation on Android, iOS

Android users get the biggest change. Live Translation now keeps working in the background even if you switch apps or lock your phone. Want to follow a multiway conversation while checking directions in Maps or browsing the web? Go ahead. The feature was built for that—Google found that more than a third of live translation sessions run longer than five minutes, so letting the translation persist makes real-world use far less clumsy.

Private listening and smarter models

iPhone owners are getting something different but handy: Translate can pipe live translations into the phone's earpiece. Hold the phone to your ear, and you can listen privately without earbuds. Android had a similar option earlier, and Google says the background translation capability will arrive on iOS eventually, though no rollout date has been given.

Under the hood, Translate is moving beyond literal text conversion. Google increasingly relies on its Gemini family of models to interpret slang, idioms, and context, not just swap words. The app offers Fast and Advanced modes for different needs, and the Gemini 3.5 Live Translate model powers a noticeable leap in live translation quality.
