Inside iOS 27 Public Beta: Speed, Siri AI, and Design

Pop the beta label off and you can try iOS 27 today. Apple has opened the first public beta for iOS 27, and it arrives alongside public betas for iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, macOS 27 and tvOS 27. The finished versions are slated for this fall, but if you like poking around unfinished software, now is your chance.

Small design shifts, noticeable speed wins

The update refines Apple’s new Liquid Glass aesthetic, smoothing corners and touchpoints so the interface feels lighter. But the headline is performance. Apple promises faster app launches (around 30 percent quicker), a Photos app that populates libraries roughly 70 percent faster, and AirDrop transfers that complete about 80 percent sooner. Network handoffs between Wi-Fi and cellular also feel less abrupt, which matters when you are juggling calls, streaming and downloads.

And yes, these numbers are more than marketing copy. During developer testing Apple tuned background processes and memory handling, so everyday actions should feel snappier even on older supported phones.

Curious about the new voice assistant? Siri AI is the marquee feature this cycle. It accepts natural-language prompts to search your device, launch actions and answer contextual questions. Apple has also packaged the new capabilities into a standalone Siri app, making them easier to access and experiment with. One caveat: regulators in the European Union are still shaping the rules, so some AI functionality will be constrained for users in that region.

Public betas are useful. They are also imperfect. Expect bugs. Expect occasional crashes and flaky behavior in apps you rely on. If your iPhone is your daily driver, consider waiting for the stable release. If you want to dive in, enroll in the Apple Beta Software Program and back up your device first.

Compatibility is generous for iPhones: any model that runs iOS 26 should run iOS 27, meaning iPhone 11 and newer plus iPhone SE from 2020 onward. Macs, however, take a harder line. The last Intel Macs that supported macOS 26 are not eligible for macOS 27; only Apple Silicon machines make the cut. iPad support is narrower as well. Compatible tablets include:

• iPad Pro (2020) or later

So what should you do? If you love new features and can tolerate rough edges, the public beta is the right play. If stability matters more than novelty, hold out for the full release in a few months. Either way, Apple is pushing toward a smoother, faster OS with an AI assistant that is finally woven into the phone experience rather than bolted on.
