Inside iPhone Air 2: A20 Pro, 2nm Chip and Camera Boost

Imagine a midrange iPhone packing flagship firepower. That image is exactly what analyst Jeff Pu sketched in a fresh research note to GF Securities, and it has the rumor mill spinning: Apple may ship an iPhone Air 2 in the first quarter of 2027.

Why does that matter? Because, according to Pu, the Air 2 won't be holding back on silicon. He says Apple will fit the handset with the A20 Pro processor, the same chipset slated for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and that A20 Pro will be manufactured on TSMC's cutting-edge 2nm node. Short version: performance and energy efficiency could take a noticeable leap.

Under the hood: radios, modem and what changes for users

Apple seems to be upgrading the Air's wireless suite too. The report points to a new N2 wireless chip taking over from the N1. The N1 already supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, but the N2 should polish the experience further, improving things like AirDrop and Personal Hotspot reliability. On the cellular side, the Air 2 is expected to use Apple's C2 5G modem, a component we've seen tied to the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models in select regions.

Hardware parity with higher-tier models shows up in other specs as well. The Air 2 reportedly retains a 6.5-inch screen but steps up camera capabilities with a 48MP ultrawide to bolster its main shooter. Memory and selfie numbers are familiar: 12GB of RAM and an 18MP front camera, matching its predecessor in those respects.

For now, Pu's note offers the clearest sketch yet of Apple nudging the Air lineup upward. If the leaks hold, Apple could be blurring the lines between midrange and flagship in a way that changes how people choose a phone. Who wants to pay for a flagship when much of the experience lands in a lighter package?
