The new "Phone to Watch Unlock" references suggest your unlocked Pixel phone will soon be able to automatically unlock a paired Pixel Watch. In other words, unlock your phone and the watch unlocks itself.

It sounds simple because it is. Expect a short, one-time setup: enter your watch PIN or pattern on the phone to establish trust, then the phone becomes an authorized key. If you replace your Pixel Watch, the relationship transfers to the new unit so you should not have to repeat the whole ritual.

These strings also point to in-product nudges—phrases like "Automatically unlock your watch?" or "Unlocking your watch just got easier"—which would introduce the feature when it rolls out. The implementation appears limited to a Pixel phone paired with a Pixel Watch, so this will likely remain an ecosystem convenience rather than a cross-brand standard.

When will it arrive? The timeline is murky, but with Google set to reveal the Pixel Watch 5 on August 12, it would make sense for the feature to land alongside that launch. Whether it ships globally at once or in waves remains to be seen.
