People briefed on the matter told Reuters that Qualcomm is exploring bespoke designs that would likely leverage technology from AlphaWave Semi, the high-speed connectivity specialist it acquired last year. Details are still fuzzy, but sources say the companies are focusing on video processing units, or VPUs, with an eye toward ramping production by the end of the year. ByteDance has previously been linked to its own AI chip efforts, so custom silicon would fit into a broader move to own more of the stack.
Why would both sides sign on? For Qualcomm, the logic is plain. Smartphone modem sales remain its backbone, but volatility tied to component costs has strained relationships with handset makers.
