A sudden spike lit up Samsung's order books last week: 1.44 million pre-orders for the new Galaxy Z8 trio. Quiet, decisive, and enough to topple a record that had stood for years.
Yonhap reported the total, and the timing makes the achievement feel even sharper. The Galaxy Note10 once held South Korea's pre-order crown at 1.38 million, but that was over an 11-day campaign. The Z8 series hit 1.44 million between Wednesday and Monday.
Foldables have been a roller-coaster. The Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 reached a combined 1.02 million pre-orders, edging out their predecessors' 0.97 million. Then came a dip: the Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 fell to 0.91 million. Last year the Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 bounced back to 1.04 million during a single week in July.

What makes the Z8 milestone notable is that it isn't just a foldable record. Earlier this year the Galaxy S26 series posted 1.35 million pre-orders over seven days, and the S lineup typically led the charge. For the first time, Samsung's foldable flagships have outpaced S-series pre-orders.
Why this feels like a turning point
Form factor matters. The Galaxy Z Fold8 introduced a wider foldable canvas that buyers clearly responded to. Samsung says the Fold8 accounted for about 70 percent of Z8 pre-orders. The profile of early customers skews younger—many in their 30s or below—and women made up roughly half of Fold8 purchasers in the initial wave.

The momentum is global. In India the Z8 trio pulled in 271,000 pre-orders in three days; last year's Z foldables took 15 days to reach that tally. Speed of uptake has shifted, and fast starts are now part of the new narrative around foldables.
The Galaxy Z8 trio just rewrote Samsung's pre-order playbook.
Early demand is a headline. Stability over the coming months will hinge on supply, carrier deals, and whether real-world use proves the wider Fold8 form factor worth the premium. Still, the Z8's performance shows that bold design choices and timing can create retail momentum.
Is this a flash or a foundation? For the moment, foldables have crossed an important threshold. The next chapters will tell whether this is the start of mainstream adoption or the latest high-water mark for premium devices.
