When Graham Sykes lets go of the line at Santa Pod, the world compresses. The countryside blurs. The dashboard is a strip of instruments and a tiny burner light. You expect a rocket. What appears is a motorcycle that runs on steam.

At 62, the Yorkshire engineer builds, owns and rides a machine called Force of Nature. It isn’t a novelty. It’s a drag racer carved from steel, plumbing and obsession. In one run this year it blasted from 0 to 100 km/h in 0.4 seconds, staking a claim as the fastest non-rocket motorcycle on the planet.

Why this matters on two wheels

High-speed motorcycling is unforgiving. There’s no cocoon of chassis and airbags. Every mistake is immediate. Yet Sykes chases raw physics anyway, trading predictable traction for the brutal physics of steam. His bike covers 400 metres in about 5.5 seconds with a top speed near 310 km/h—numbers usually reserved for rocket-powered machines.

Only one bike has run the 400 metres quicker: a French rocket motorcycle by Eric Teboul, timed at 4.976 seconds. But Force of Nature owns the shorter dashes. It clocks 200 metres in 3.17 seconds at 326 km/h, and 300 metres in 4.53 seconds at 311 km/h. These are acceleration figures that read like punchlines until you feel them.

Sykes began the build in 2022 and this is the fifth iteration. He believes he can shave roughly 0.6 seconds off the 400-metre time and push below five seconds—an ambitious but believable aim after a recent run that improved his mark to 5.44 seconds.

A short, violent burst of energy

The propulsion is elegant in its brutality. A small burner fed by white spirit or vegetable oil heats six feed tubes, transferring heat to a 120-litre pressure tank full of purified water. The water climbs to around 250°C and the system holds roughly 580 psi. That pressurised steam delivers about 2.9 seconds of explosive thrust—enough for the bike to leap forward like a catapult.

On Sykes’s to-do list: smoothing flow through the system so the steam pulse lasts longer, ideally nudging that acceleration window past three seconds. Right now the launch inflicts roughly 6.8 g on the rider. In other words, an 85 kg rider feels like 580 kg for an instant. No wonder Sykes clamps the bars the moment he hits start.

This isn’t just an engineering stunt. It’s a different path to high performance: combustion heat and fluid dynamics instead of internal-combustion metering or electric torque curves. Steam doesn’t hum with electric silence nor roar with conventional combustion; it slams with pressure and then it’s gone. That transient force demands systems built for timing, not just power.

For fans of oddball engineering and the relentless pursuit of speed, Force of Nature is proof that innovation still lives outside corporate wind tunnels. It’s messy. It’s temperamental. It’s thrilling. And on a good run at Santa Pod, it feels like a small, improbable victory over convention.
