Fiat's small electric Topolino has been included in Time magazine's 2026 Best Inventions list under the design category, bringing international recognition to the automaker's revival of a historic nameplate.

Design recognition and heritage

The name Topolino, Italian for "little mouse," dates to the late 1930s, when Italy sought an affordable people’s car. Commissioned under Benito Mussolini, engineer Dante Giacosa produced the original Topolino, first launched in 1936 and built through the late 1950s, with more than 500,000 units sold over its two-decade production run. Fiat has reused that storied name for a compact electric quadricycle, combining retro styling cues with the simplicity of an electric powertrain.

Time placed the Topolino in its design category to highlight the car's distinctive approach to urban mobility. The vehicle pairs a deliberately small footprint and straightforward systems with a nostalgic look. Its maximum speed is limited to 40 km/h, although Fiat offers optional speed-increase kits. Time's assessment noted that the car's proportions and configuration make it well suited to everyday commutes and light errands on congested city streets.

Market performance and positioning

The Topolino is not merely a concept or marketing prop for Fiat; it has become one of the brand's best-selling models in its segment. Fiat reports the Topolino was the top-selling electric quadricycle in Europe in 2025 and retained that leading position in 2026. Strong sales in Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland have underpinned its performance, and from July it also reached the top sales spot in France. Fiat executives say this market response shows demand for small, practical and stylish electric vehicles.

Fiat CEO Arno Belloni described the Topolino as proof that even a very small vehicle can carry a large idea, saying the model conveys Fiat's long-held view of mobility as a source of freedom and enjoyment by marrying Italian design appeal with a practical everyday solution. Fiat designed the Topolino as a dual-purpose vehicle intended for safe use in private or gated communities while also meeting the legal requirements for street use. Its listed base price is about $15,000, a figure Fiat says gives the model strong competitive positioning within the quadricycle category.
