Mercedes and Nvidia announced on 16 October 2026 that they have extended their partnership to develop a next-generation SAE Level 4 autonomous driving system and to deepen integration between Mercedes' MB.OS and Nvidia Hyperion.
Mercedes will provide vehicle safety and systems-integration expertise, the companies said. Nvidia will supply its in-vehicle computing and sensor architecture Hyperion, the Alpamayo Stack driving software with AI reasoning capabilities, and the Halos safety system for redundancy and guardrails.
Mercedes was the first manufacturer to receive regulatory approval for SAE Level 3 automated driving in Europe, but that system, branded Driver Pilot and developed with Nvidia, is limited to speeds up to 95 km/h and to specified highways.
The announced programme aims to deliver an SAE Level 4 system that can perform the entire driving task and respond to problems without requiring a human to take control, within defined operating conditions, the companies said. Level 4 remains one step below Level 5 full automation.
Deeper software and hardware integration between MB.OS and Nvidia Hyperion will underpin the work, the companies added. No production timeline or market availability details were disclosed.
