A single diagnostics file turned months of rumor into near-certainty. Files spilled from a ransomware attack on Tata Electronics revealed a diagnostics log that points squarely at a variable aperture for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max main camera.
The log names Sony's IMX905 as the new primary sensor. Pixel size reads as 1.22μm, the same figure Apple used in last year’s Pro models. That detail suggests the upgrade is less about ditching the old sensor and more about giving it a mechanical iris to change how it gathers light.
What photographers will actually get
Variable aperture. Two words that are small but meaningful. In practice that could mean better low-light shots without relying only on computational tricks, and cleaner highlights when the sun is brutal. For enthusiasts who shoot in mixed lighting, it’s a practical advantage, not just a spec-sheet flourish.

Other cameras look familiar. The telephoto module, ultrawide lens, LiDAR unit and the selfie camera appear unchanged from the current Pro lineup. So expect the biggest tangible change to focus on the main sensor’s flexibility rather than a wholesale camera redesign.
Why should you care? Because changing aperture alters how lenses handle depth and exposure. It’s one more physical tool Apple can pair with computational algorithms, and that combination often yields the most natural-looking results.

There’s also a financial angle. Component shortages and rising memory prices are still squeezing suppliers, and leaked notes imply Apple may pass some of those costs to buyers. Earlier reports quantified that at about €185 extra compared to last year’s Pro models.
Timing remains the same. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the new iPhone Ultra in September. This leak doesn’t replace an official announcement, but it does narrow the gap between rumor and reality.
If the diagnostics file is accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro series may be less about larger sensors and more about smarter optics. That subtle shift could be the difference between another incremental update and something photographers actually notice in their camera rolls.
