Elon Musk has announced on the social platform X that Tesla will reduce Cybertruck production starting in 2027 to free manufacturing capacity for future robotaxi development. Musk said the cuts are intended to make room for increased robotaxi output, though he added the reductions will not take effect until mid next year.
Production, sales and controversies
The Cybertruck is built only at Tesla's Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, which is the sole plant currently dedicated to the model. Tesla does not publish detailed model-by-model sales figures, but independent estimates indicate Cybertruck sales since 2023 have not exceeded 70,000 units. Musk had previously targeted annual sales of 250,000 units, a target that the market has so far failed to meet.

Weak sales make moving production equipment to another Tesla factory less likely, and the company may phase the vehicle out over time. The Cybertruck has been controversial since launch because of its unconventional design; some jurisdictions have restricted or banned its use, with fatal crashes cited among the reasons given for those measures. The vehicle has been on public roads for about three years.
Tesla's stated aim is to prioritize capacity for robotaxi production by reducing Cybertruck volumes from 2027, with implementation delayed until mid next year, according to Musk's post.
