Tuya used IFA 2026 to introduce Doova, a new AI-powered home companion robot designed primarily for older adults who want to continue living independently while having easier access to smart-home control, monitoring and emergency assistance.
During our visit to the Tuya booth, the company demonstrated how Doova can interact with connected devices around the home, respond to voice commands, identify potential emergency situations and patrol the home when its owner is away.
The robot is part of Tuya’s broader AIoT ecosystem and represents the company’s attempt to bring its smart-home platform into a more physical and personal form.

Doova can control connected devices around the home
One of Doova’s basic roles is to act as a mobile smart-home controller.
During the booth demonstration, the presenter used the command:
“Hey Tuya, I’m home.”
The system then triggered a home-arrival routine, turning on the lights and opening the curtains.
According to Tuya, Doova can also communicate with other connected products such as televisions, air conditioners and compatible smart-home devices through the wider Tuya ecosystem.
The idea is particularly relevant for older users who may find conventional smart-home apps or complex interfaces less convenient than simple voice interaction.

Emergency assistance is a central part of the concept
The second major feature demonstrated at IFA focused on personal safety.
Tuya designed Doova specifically with independently living seniors in mind, and one of the situations the company is targeting is a fall or other emergency when nobody else is immediately present.
During the demonstration, the presenter simulated falling to the floor and called:
“Hey Tuya, help.”
Doova then attempted to determine where the voice was coming from and moved toward the user.
Tuya says the robot combines sound-source localization with its visual system to locate the person and assess their condition. The official specification describes Doova as using a four-microphone sound-localization system together with AI vision-based skeletal recognition.
Once the robot reaches the user, it can ask whether assistance is required.

Doova can contact an emergency contact by video call
If the user confirms that help is needed, Doova can initiate a video call to a predefined emergency contact.
This feature was demonstrated at the booth, although the live call itself did not work reliably because of poor network conditions inside the exhibition hall.
Tuya says that if Doova detects an emergency and does not receive a response from the user within 60 seconds, the system can automatically begin its emergency workflow and send a two-way live video call alert to family members.
This makes Doova more than a conventional voice assistant. The robot is designed to physically move toward a user in distress and provide a direct communication channel to another person.
Patrol mode keeps an eye on the home when the owner leaves
Doova can also switch roles when nobody is at home.
During the demonstration, the presenter said:
“Hey Tuya, see you.”
The robot then triggered a departure routine that included closing the curtains and turning off the lights before entering patrol mode.
In this mode, Doova can move around the home and allow the owner to check what is happening remotely through a smartphone.
Tuya says Doova uses a room-based patrol strategy, moving through different areas and performing 360-degree scans before generating a home-safety report that can be viewed remotely.
For users living alone, that means the same robot designed to provide companionship and emergency support while they are home can also become a mobile monitoring device when they leave.

It returns to its charging dock automatically
Doova is designed to operate with minimal day-to-day intervention.
Once a task is completed or the robot needs power, it can locate its charging dock and recharge itself automatically.
That behavior is particularly important for the target audience. A companion robot intended for elderly users would lose much of its usefulness if it constantly required manual charging or repositioning.
Tuya confirms that Doova supports autonomous docking and recharging.
More than a security robot
Although the demonstration we saw concentrated largely on smart-home control, emergency assistance and patrol functionality, Tuya’s broader vision for Doova goes beyond security.
The company positions it as an AI home companion capable of conversation, everyday assistance and wellness-related support.
Tuya says Doova can provide medication, weather and schedule reminders, help users understand bills and letters, warn about possible scams and offer assistance with smart appliances. Its conversational functions are powered by a multimodal large language model rather than being limited to a fixed set of voice commands.
Those additional capabilities were not the focus of our short booth demonstration, but they help explain why Tuya describes the device as a companion robot rather than simply a mobile smart-home hub.

A practical approach to home robotics
What makes Doova interesting is that Tuya is not trying to build a humanoid household robot capable of doing every physical task.
Instead, the company has concentrated on areas where a mobile robot could offer more immediate value: communication, monitoring, voice interaction, smart-home control and emergency assistance.
For an older adult living alone, those functions could potentially address several everyday concerns without requiring a complex humanoid machine.
At IFA 2026, Doova therefore felt less like a futuristic robot butler and more like a moving AI interface for the connected home.
Whether it can reliably identify emergency situations and become a genuinely useful companion will require much more testing outside a trade-show environment. But Tuya’s first demonstration showed a clear target: using AI, sensors and its existing smart-home ecosystem to help seniors remain independent for longer.

Feels overhyped but practical. A roaming camera + LLM = privacy concerns tho. Also curious about battery life, noise and how it handles false alarms
I worked with eldercare tech a bit, seen fall detectors fail and save lives. If Doova nails voice docking and calls it could actually keep folks independent longer. Hope it's affordable
Is this even reliable? Sound localization, vision, cool but will it work in real homes? Network issues already showed up, hmm something tells me demos are easier than messy apartments.
