Ford's new LMDh prototype was photographed and filmed running at Monza as the manufacturer prepares its return to top tier endurance racing in 2027. The car remains officially unnamed and unrevealed, but the tests confirm continued development ahead of the season debut.

Ford first announced plans to build an LMDh race car in early 2025 and the prototype has since completed shakedowns at Paul Ricard, Portimão and Silverstone. At Monza the team began using a second chassis, though available footage shows only one. The car carries a blue and white camouflage paint scheme and retains the LMDh silhouette, with a canopy style center section, a high center fin, a large rear wing and pronounced front splitter and rear diffuser. A few details on this example, such as its headlamp treatment, differ from earlier sightings.

The prototype is fitted with a naturally aspirated 5.4 liter V8 derived from Ford's Coyote engine, and the hybrid system is rated at 680 horsepower; the engine was fitted to the chassis and fired for the first time in July 2026.

Technical partners and competition context

Ford is developing the car in collaboration with Oreca, which supplies the chassis. The company has not released an official name for the prototype. The Ford entry will be one of two new LMDh cars joining the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship, alongside the McLaren MCL-HY, which uses a chassis by Dallara.

The 2027 FIA WEC calendar will feature nine events. The championship starts in March in Qatar, includes the 6 Hours of Silverstone which returns to the calendar for the first time since 2019, and concludes in November in Bahrain. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is scheduled for June 12 and 13. The hypercar field next year will include Ford and McLaren alongside Aston Martin, Toyota, Cadillac, BMW, Genesis, Ferrari and Peugeot; Alpine will not return for 2027.

Ford's move represents a formal return to top tier endurance racing after several decades. The manufacturer's last top level effort that included Le Mans dates to 1969, when the GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the fourth consecutive year. Ford has also campaigned a race car based on the modern GT in recent years, including a factory backed LM GTE Pro effort that recorded a class win at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Ford Racing has said it will fully reveal the 2027 hypercar in late November. Photographs and video captured at Monza include 10 images credited NM2255 and footage originating from Raw Car Sounds on YouTube. Published 28 Oct 2026, 13:58 UTC. By Ciprian Florea.
