The first battery-electric, high-performance variant of BMW's new X5 has reappeared in spy photos as development continues alongside an updated internal-combustion X5 M. BMW already sells an electric X5 as the iX5 and is testing a distinct X5 M Electric prototype that aims to offer a zero-emissions alternative to the forthcoming ICE-based X5 M.

iX5 on sale in 2027 and factory details
BMW introduced the fifth-generation X5 in June 2026; the model entered production about two months later at the company s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina and at the Dadong plant in China. The all-electric version, marketed as the iX5, was shown at launch with a manufacturer estimate of 435 miles EPA range (700 km) when equipped with the 144 kWh battery pack.

BMW lists the iX5 60 AWD for its 2027 market rollout. The 60 AWD uses two electric motors for a combined output of 570 horsepower (578 ps / 425 kW) and 593 lb-ft (804 Nm) of torque and BMW quotes a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds (0-97 kph). BMW s published schedule indicates the iX5 will arrive in that market in 2027.

X5 M development, powertrain possibilities and comparisons
A new X5 M based on the G65 generation is also in development. Reports indicate BMW may use a plug-in-hybrid version of its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 similar to the current M5 powertrain; that M5 powertrain is rated at 717 hp (727 ps / 535 kW) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) in sedan and wagon forms and delivers 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) in 3.4 seconds for the sedan and 3.5 seconds for the wagon. Because the forthcoming X5 M is expected to be heavier and more spacious, it is likely to be somewhat slower than the latest M5 and may not match the straight-line performance of the previous X5 M.

BMW has also been testing a battery-electric X5 M variant; any figures for that model remain unofficial.
- BMW iX5 60 AWD: 570 hp (578 ps / 425 kW), 593 lb-ft (804 Nm), 0-60 mph 4.4 s; EPA range estimate 435 miles (700 km) with 144 kWh battery (BMW estimate)
- Latest M5 (plug-in-hybrid V8): 717 hp (727 ps / 535 kW), 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm); 0-62 mph in 3.4 s (sedan), 3.5 s (wagon)
- Rumored X5 M Electric (unofficial): reported 800-900 bhp range (811-912 ps / 596-671 kW) - not confirmed by BMW

Spy images, design cues and timing
Recent spy photographs supplied by SH Proshots show a heavily camouflaged X5 M Electric prototype with distinct exterior revisions. The prototype appears to have a redesigned front bumper with new intake shapes, an altered grille treatment, and revised headlight graphics visible beneath vinyl coverings. The rear bumper is also changed; provisional reflectors and testing-specific mirrors are visible in some shots and may not reflect final production details.

The prototype s wheel arches do not appear dramatically widened and the side skirts and mirrors look similar to the standard X5, though the test wheels are bespoke and likely conceal an upgraded braking package. Reports from the testing program indicate chassis settings are being revised for faster cornering and a lower ride height compared with the standard X5, but final tuning remains subject to change before production.
BMW has not confirmed powertrain figures for the X5 M Electric. Industry sources and observers place potential output in the 800-900 bhp range, but those numbers are speculative. Multiple outlets and spy images suggest the electric X5 M could reach production sometime next year or in 2028, with the ICE X5 M expected to appear on a similar timeframe; BMW has not announced official launch dates for either high-performance variant.
