Audi has ended production of the A8 full-size sedan at its Neckarsulm plant after a 32-year run. The factory stopped making A8s in October 2026 and now produces the A5 sedan and wagon while Audi evaluates options for a future flagship.

End of A8 production at Neckarsulm

The Neckarsulm factory, which built every generation of the A8 since the model's debut, ceased A8 assembly in October 2026. Audi stopped accepting new orders for the full-size model in February 2026, leaving buyers to select from dealer inventory. As of this writing, the A8 remains marketed in the United States as a 2027 model-year vehicle.

Plans for a successor and China-focused proposals

In March 2026 Audi confirmed that a new generation of its flagship is under consideration and said any replacement could be revealed by the end of the decade. One technical path under discussion is sharing architecture with the Volkswagen Group’s next-generation Panamera, a model scheduled to enter series production at Porsche’s Leipzig facility around 2030.

German business publication Manager Magazin reports Audi has also examined a China-focused flagship developed in collaboration with Huawei and a local automaker, either FAW or SAIC. Such a China-specific model would rely on established local technology and manufacturing relationships; Audi would need to tailor any vehicle to Chinese market preferences for it to be viable.

Final A8 specifications and market positioning

The outgoing A8 was priced at $95,100 in the US market and shipped with a set of standard features. Those standard items included:

  • S line exterior
  • OLED taillights
  • 22-way comfort front seats

The base A8 uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that Audi rates at 335 horsepower, with quattro all-wheel drive enabling 0 to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in 5.6 seconds. The high-performance S8 is powered by a V8 producing 563 horsepower and 590 pound-feet (800 Newton-meters) of torque, with a 0 to 60 time of 3.8 seconds. This generation, designated D5, entered production nine years ago.

With A8 production paused, Audi currently designates the Q9 SUV as its series-production flagship. The brand’s Nuvolari supercar remains a limited-production halo model, described by Audi as its interpretation of a V8-powered sports car comparable to the Lamborghini Temerario.

In the large luxury-sedan segment Audi’s exit leaves traditional rivals Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series without the A8 as a direct competitor; other contenders include the Genesis G90 and the outgoing Lexus LS.
