BMW Opens i3 Orders Early as Demand Outpaces Plans Today

BMW pushed the button a few months sooner than planned. Why? Because the waiting list grew louder and longer, and the German brand chose to answer. On June 18 customers in Europe could finally start configuring the all-new i3, months ahead of the fall launch BMW originally had in mind.

Queues beat marketing calendars

This is not a flash sale. No gimmicks. Just genuine demand. The first offering is the i3 1st Edition, a limited-year run that will likely be replaced by other variants after the initial production window. BMW has kept specific 1st Edition trim details close to the chest, but insiders say the package will be designed to feel special without inflating the price tag.

The launch model is the i3 50 xDrive. Twin electric motors. 463 horsepower. 476 pound-feet of torque, roughly 646 newton-metres. It rides on an 800-volt electrical architecture and drinks from a 107.8 kWh battery. EPA figures point to about 440 miles of range, which is roughly 708 kilometres.

Fast charging is part of the story. BMW claims a 10 to 80 percent charge can be achieved in as little as 22 minutes. The car also offers vehicle-to-load functionality rated at 3.7 kW. For buyers in the United States the i3 will arrive with the NACS connector and a CCS adapter to keep charging flexible.

A cheaper single-motor i3 40 — rear-wheel drive with a smaller battery — will join the lineup later. BMW is reserving some of the variety for future months: a Touring wagon and a long-wheelbase version are on the roadmap, with the long-wheelbase model intended primarily for the Chinese market.

Production remains on schedule despite the early order window. Assembly of the i3 Sedan will begin in August at BMW’s Munich plant, with the factory gradually shifting entirely to EV production in 2027. The Touring wagon is slated to start rolling off lines in 2027 as well. Expect the earliest customer deliveries in September at the soonest.

Orders are open now, but don’t expect to drive away tomorrow.

Price signals are still partly speculative. BMW has not released official U.S. pricing, but analysts place the i3 below the iX crossover. The iX starts at about €57,000, so the i3 is expected to land beneath the roughly €56,000 mark.

There will always be critics. Some people talk EVs down. Others line up. The physics is simple: interest converts to action. BMW reacted to real-world interest rather than a marketing calendar. The result is an early ordering window and a tighter waitlist — exactly the kind of problem most automakers would gladly have.
