Mercedes-AMG CLE 63: V8 Returns with Flat-Plane Fury

Spy photos reveal a 2027 Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 prototype with a flat-plane 4.0-liter V8, roughly 600 hp, a retained 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and a rare 650 hp Mythos edition. Launch expected late 2026.

There it is, half-hidden under layers of camo, and yet impossible to mistake: a V8 breathing where a four-cylinder hybrid was once rumored to live. Spy shots of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 prototype make one thing clear. AMG decided to roar, not whisper.

Affalterbach’s answer to skeptics

The heart of this story is mechanical and unapologetic. Under the bonnet sits a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crank. Short, sharp pulses. A characterful soundtrack. Early estimates pin output around 600 horsepower for the regular CLE 63, with a hotter Mythos edition apparently nudging close to 650 horsepower and destined to be outrageously rare—rumor says just 30 cars.

Yes, electrification is part of the plan. AMG appears to keep a 48-volt mild-hybrid assist similar to the S 580 4MATIC. Why? It trims weight penalties, smooths low-end torque delivery, and helps with engine-off coasting and energy recuperation—handy when Euro 7 rules tighten the legal noose. The mild-hybrid trick keeps the V8 lively without turning the car into a battery on wheels.

Onlookers will notice the visual cues before the cabin is revealed. The prototype wears a bold Panamericana grille, slimmer headlights, and larger side intakes. At the back, rhomboid exhaust finishers replace the round tips of the six-cylinder 53 model. AMG is pointing this car at drivers who still care about how a performance coupe should sound and behave.

Underpinning the theatrics is performance-oriented 4MATIC all-wheel drive. That should give the CLE 63 better traction and composure than you’d expect from a high-strung V8 coupe, especially in variable weather. What we haven’t seen is the interior, though whispers claim Mercedes-Benz will roll out updated controls and fresh software across the CLE range, cabriolet included. Stuttgart hasn’t confirmed anything yet.

Timing-wise, expect the CLE 63 to join showrooms in the latter part of 2026 as a 2027 model. That places it squarely above the six-cylinder CLE 53 and gives purists the answer they wanted: Affalterbach still builds emotional driver’s cars.

On paper the CLE 63 looks sharper than BMW’s current M4, and it won’t go head-to-head with Audi Sport’s RS 5 in the traditional sense. Audi’s response arrives as a plug-in hybrid V6 with impressive numbers but a hefty curb weight—about 2,355 kilograms—making it a different kind of contender, one more focused on brute combined output than pure agility.

So who is this car for? Enthusiasts who demand a V8’s immediacy and personality, but who also accept mild electrification as a necessary refinement. It’s for drivers who prize torque, sound, and a grinning face at the tail of a road trip report.

This CLE 63 prototype proves AMG hasn’t abandoned visceral performance—it's doubling down.
