Volvo Refreshes XC40 for 2027 with Tech and Safety Upgrades

The XC40 has been a quiet champion in Volvo's line-up for nearly a decade. Small, nimble and city-friendly, it first arrived in 2017 and has since worn many faces: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric. Now the Swedes have given it another refresh, the same treatment they recently applied to the XC60 and XC90, to keep the compact SUV current into the next chapter.

What changed and why it matters

Design updates are subtle but purposeful. You'll notice the updated Thor's Hammer Matrix LED headlights with a new daytime running light signature up front, a reshaped grille, a revised bumper and reworked front wings and hood. At the rear there are new LED taillights, a tidier tailgate and a cleaner bumper. New diamond-cut wheels in 18-, 19- and 20-inch sizes complete the look. The changes tighten the XC40’s presence without turning it into something else.

Inside, Volvo has bumped the main screen up to an 11.2-inch panel that promises quicker response and fewer menus between you and the functions you use most. It also brings Google Gemini, Google’s next-generation AI assistant, into the cabin. Expect faster voice interactions and more contextual help while driving. A larger wireless charger, refreshed upholstery choices and warmer cabin lighting rounds out the interior tweaks. Options now include Arianne Cardamom leather paired with Brown Ash wood, or a Black Ash trim in place of the aluminum accents.

Safety and driver assistance see arguably the biggest lift. Volvo has upgraded the sensory suite with new front and corner radars, an updated front-facing camera, rear corner radars, 12 additional ultrasonic sensors and improved parking cameras. New features arriving with the update include Door Opening Alert and an enhanced Pilot Assist that adds lane change assist. The optional 360-degree camera now offers a 3D view, making parking and low-speed maneuvering easier and more precise.

Volvo’s aim is clear: keep the XC40 relevant by blending incremental design polish with smarter tech and stronger safety.

The company says production will begin later this fall with first deliveries expected in early 2027. There are no announced changes to the powertrain line-up for now, and US markets will receive the standard XC40 variants first. Internationally, Volvo has also updated its EX40 and EC40 electric siblings in parallel.

Nine years into its run, the XC40’s second refresh is less about reinvention and more about longevity. It’s a pragmatic move—a small SUV that feels refreshed rather than reset, and one that should continue to be a sensible pick for buyers who want Volvo’s safety DNA wrapped in a compact, urban-friendly package.
