Spy photographs and recent test mules confirm BMW is preparing a comprehensive mid-cycle refresh for the G9X M5, and the changes follow the brand's Neue Klasse design language both outside and in. The facelifted M5 has been seen wearing heavy camouflage vinyl, but its new vizor-like front end and interior layout are already legible.

Published 30 October 2026, by Cristian Gnaticov. The latest images, supplied by SH Proshots and taken by our spy photographers, show a prototype that appears fitted with production headlights and revised bodywork around the nose.

The front end will adopt the Neue Klasse face, with a pair of much smaller kidney grilles set into a wide vizor element and new headlight assemblies that the latest test car seems to carry in final form. The front bumper, hood and front fenders are revised and the bumper takes on a slightly more aggressive look. The side profile appears largely carried over, while the rear gains new taillights, a reshaped bumper and a new diffuser. Expect revised wheel designs and additional colour choices; the most recent tester was finished in red with black alloys.

Interior follows Neue Klasse

Interior changes are equally significant. Zoomed glimpses through the side glass show the Neue Klasse pillar-to-pillar Panoramic iDrive display stretching across the dashboard and a new infotainment layout. BMW is also likely to introduce an updated steering wheel and refreshed trim and upholstery as part of the mid-cycle package.

Official word from BMW has not confirmed any mechanical upgrades. The current M5 uses a plug-in hybrid 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 producing a combined 717 hp (535 kW/727 ps) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque. BMW rates the M5 Sedan at 60 mph in 3.4 seconds; the M5 Touring is one-tenth of a second slower. Observers note that the addition of hybrid hardware has increased mass compared with earlier, non-hybrid M5s.

Some industry watchers expect BMW could increase output for the facelift, while others anticipate the powertrain will remain unchanged. BMW has not released confirmed figures for the refreshed car.

The current M5 is sold as a 2027 model in the United States. The 2027 M5 Sedan starts at $123,300, before destination, options and dealer fees, while the M5 Touring begins at $125,300. The facelifted M5 is expected to arrive at dealerships as a 2028 model year vehicle and will likely carry a higher asking price than the outgoing car.
