BMW X2 M40i Spied: Neue Klasse Face, Sharper Attitude

Grab the camera. The compact coupe-SUV that polarised buyers when it first arrived has returned wearing BMWs Neue Klasse face and a look that demands a second glance.

These latest spy shots appear to show the range-topper. Blue brake calipers. Four tailpipes. Front and rear bumpers that read like a challenge. All the telltale signs point to a sportier X2, potentially rebadged as the X2 M40i xDrive instead of the outgoing M35i nameplate.

What to watch for

Names matter. If BMW swaps M35i for M40i, most will assume there is more power under the hood. The current X2 M35i xDrive uses a 2.0-litre turbo four with 296 bhp (300 ps/221 kW) and 400 Nm of torque, good for 0 to 100 kph in 5.4 seconds and a 250 kph top speed limited electronically. In markets like the United States the same model is slightly perky at 312 bhp (316 ps/233 kW) and reaches 97 kph in about 5.2 seconds.

Official confirmation of a power bump or the M40i badge has not arrived. But even if underpinnings remain unchanged, the Neue Klasse styling is a strong enough reason to rebrand. The new vizor-style face and reworked rear end will make it easy to spot on the road. Inside, prototypes reveal a pillar-to-pillar display sitting low on the dash and a fresh infotainment layout that mirrors BMWs newest models.

Pricing will likely follow the current range. In Germany the 2026 X2 M35i xDrive starts at about 67,100 euros, while the U S equivalent dealer price converts to roughly 47,385 euros in some markets. Whether the M40i carries a premium price or simply wears new badges remains an open question.

Expect the facelifted X2 to surface officially in the coming months, possibly arriving in the United States as a 2027 model. For now, these spy shots do more than tease a cosmetic update. They hint at BMW reshaping a familiar package to fit the Neue Klasse era, and that could change how buyers judge the little crossover on its next run.
