The Green Hell has a funny way of exposing secrets. On one lap, it produces a high-pitched squeal from fresh rubber. On another, it reveals what a modern M means when the engine note is gone. That was the scene when a camouflaged 2028 BMW iX5 M prototype hunted the Nordschleife, trading V8 bellow for the violent protest of wide performance tyres.
Performance by design, not by accident
The disguise couldn't hide intent. Big lower intakes sit front and centre, but they are not theatrical. They direct air to heat exchangers tasked with cooling the front drive units, power electronics and brakes. Think of it as airflow with purpose, sculpted to keep electric hardware within its comfort zone during hard laps.

Styling cues trace back to BMW's Neue Klasse, yet the upper grille is where the designers have fun. Temporary lights flank the upright nose in the test mule, but production cars may carry X-shaped yellow running lights. Rumours circulate that the outer cutouts will house track driving lights inspired by the M Concept Neue Klasse, a small detail that signals serious intent.
From the side, the iX5 M sits low on performance suspension, wrapped in sticky rubber and riding on lightweight alloys. Flush-mounted winglet door handles keep surfaces clean and reduce drag. The rear has abandoned the visual language of quad exhausts in favour of a smooth valance. No dramatic diffuser yet, but expect BMW M to iterate underbody aero to balance efficiency with downforce.

Underneath, the G95’s architecture steps away from the mechanical differentials of its combustion sibling. Instead, the iX5 M looks to a sophisticated all-wheel-drive electrical setup.
Why all that complexity? Torque vectoring at lightning speed. Imagine an electronic brain that manages drivetrain, steering, braking and energy recuperation as a single system. BMW calls this the Heart of Joy central dynamic unit. It blends motors, software and control algorithms into one tight loop that reacts faster than older electronic architectures. The payoff is sharper responses and a more connected feel on track.
Power figures are still unofficial, but context helps. With the XM Label and outgoing X5 M Competition as benchmarks, anticipate at least 800 metric horsepower. Whether BMW quotes 789 or a rounded figure higher, the goal is obvious: make the electric X5 M as ferocious as its petrol cousins.

Expectations extend inside. The cabin will lean into high-tech touches, including BMW Panoramic Vision and a cockpit that may do away with a traditional iDrive controller. That will divide opinions. Purists might miss a rotary knob, while tech-minded buyers will welcome the cleaner, screen-first interface.
Production is reportedly slated for April 2028 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, the brand’s global hub for rear-biased X models. An official unveiling should arrive in the second half of 2027, which makes the iX5 M a 2028 model year car in many markets.

And for those who still crave internal combustion, BMW will not abandon them. A next-generation X5 M with an S68 twin-turbo V8 and 48-volt assistance is also on the horizon. Choice, it seems, remains part of the M division’s plan.
So what did the Nordschleife tell us? That an M can be silent and savage all at once. The iX5 M’s lap may not have screamed with exhaust, but the tyres spoke loudly enough.
