Genesis GV80 Hybrid Debuts 347hp Turbo, New Look for 2027

Imagine pulling away in near silence, the big SUV gliding off on electric power before the turbocharged engine ever joins the party. That’s the sensation Genesis wants to sell when the GV80 hybrid reaches U.S. showrooms in September.

What’s under the hood

At the heart of the update is the 2.5 Turbo Hybrid System, a parallel hybrid that pairs a 2.5-liter turbo gasoline engine with a starter-generator and a dedicated drive motor. The components work together: the starter-generator manages engine starts and on-board power generation, while the drive motor spins the wheels and helps recover energy under braking.

The headline figure is a combined 347 hp. That’s about 16 percent more power than the gasoline-only GV80 and, according to Genesis, roughly a 25 percent improvement in fuel economy when tested on a GV80 with 19-inch wheels. Short bursts feel immediate — EV-like throttle response — because the system is designed to cold-start in electric mode and keep the SUV running on battery power until it hits 30 kph (19 mph), at which point the gasoline engine steps in.

One tangible technical first for the Hyundai Motor Group: this hybrid uses a liquid-cooled battery rather than an air-cooled pack. The result is higher sustained discharge capability and more consistent performance under load. The transmission and clutch have been tweaked too. Clutch control is sharpened for quicker acceleration, the transmission architecture allows the P2 motor to spin in reverse for backing up, and the first-gear ratio has been raised to favor brisk launches.

On the software side, Genesis says the 2.5 Turbo Hybrid includes stay mode, hierarchical predictive control, and smart regenerative braking — features that smooth operation and squeeze extra efficiency out of everyday driving.

New look, quieter cabin

The hybrid’s exterior gets subtle nudges: a reworked grille up front and new wheel designs to match the SUV’s stance. Inside, Genesis leans into luxury twists with four new two-tone color schemes, including Obsidian Black paired with Taiga Green and Ultramarine Blue with Travertine Beige. Two fresh real-wood trim options and updated quilting patterns add tactile variety.
