Mercedes-AMG Retires the Ferocious A 45 S Final Edition

A last puff of turbo, a gleam of yellow against matte gray and glossy black, and the curtain falls on one of the most unapologetic hot hatches of recent years. The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ Final Edition is more showpiece than reinvention — a celebratory send-off that doubles as a collector’s wink.

Black, yellow and unmistakably AMG

The Final Edition dresses the A 45 S in Manufaktur Mountain Gray Magno paint and dark chrome trims. Nineteen-inch forged cross-spoke wheels wear matte black finish and special hub covers bearing Affalterbach’s yellow emblem. Brake calipers are black with white AMG lettering. Small touches — a silver-look fuel cap, yellow-and-black 45 S badges on the doors, and AMG’s black-diamond mirror housings — add an almost racing-inspired contrast to the muted bodywork.

It also gets the AMG Night Package, which means a beefed-up front apron with an enlarged splitter, extra flicks, lateral airflow edges, a roof spoiler and a diffuser blade finished in gloss black. The effect is purposeful, not just ornamental. It looks like it wants to bite the road.

Inside, the cabin leans into the limited-edition theme. Artico faux leather meets Microcut microfiber in black with yellow contrast stitching. Front headrests carry 45 S embroidery, the centre console shows a dedicated badge, and the AMG Performance steering wheel is wrapped in Nappa leather and Microcut with matching yellow stitching. Black backlit AMG door sills and bespoke mats complete the package.

Same brutal engine, refined theatrics

Don’t expect more power. The Final Edition keeps the same 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder that made this model infamous: 421 metric horsepower (310 kW/415 bhp) and 500 Nm of torque. That toolkit launches the hatch to 100 kph in 3.9 seconds and tops out at a 270 kph electronic limit. Power goes through an AMG Speedshift DCT-8G dual-clutch and the 4MATIC+ system with AMG Torque Control, which apportions drive between left and right rear wheels for sharper responses on corner exit.

This is the end of an era for one of the most extreme production hot hatches.

The Final Edition is largely about detail rather than drama: cosmetic upgrades, exclusive finishes and the kind of interior flourishes collectors prize. Mechanically, it’s the same snarling pocket rocket that has kept Audi’s RS 3 and BMW’s M135i honest since the current A-Class generation arrived in 2018.

Orders for the Final Edition are open in the United Kingdom. Mercedes-AMG hasn’t said how many will be made or how many will arrive in specific markets, but buyers in the UK can expect a recommended on-the-road price starting at around €80,200.

For context, the smaller AMG A 35 sits in a lower bracket, from roughly €56,680, while standard A-Class trims in the UK lineup start at about €37,597 for the Sport Edition and rise to around €44,781 for higher-spec versions. The hatchback, in its current form, is not offered in the United States, and neither is this fierce A 45 S.

It’s tempting to read the Final Edition as a swansong for combustion-era theatrics in compact form. Is the A 45 S leaving because buyers’ tastes are changing, because regulations push budgets toward electrification, or simply because AMG wants the next chapter to arrive cleaner and newer? Probably some of all three.

Whatever the reason, the Final Edition is a tidy reminder of what a hot hatch can be when engineering runs toward extremes: compact, loud, sharply dressed and unapologetically quick. Will owners miss it? If you’ve ever loved a small car that behaves like a big one, the answer is yes.
