Mercedes-AMG's New Electric GT SUV: First Teasers Hint

Imagine a GT coupe standing up, shrugging off low-slung elegance for a broader, more muscular silhouette. That is the image Mercedes-AMG wants you to picture after releasing its first official teasers for the forthcoming GT SUV. Short glimpses, long shadows, and the unmistakable pulse of AMG tuning — all dropped on social channels to stir appetite before the full reveal later this year.

A coupe grown into a crossover — but still AMG at heart

The teasers do more than tease styling. They confirm a lineage. The headlights and taillights trace the GT 4-door Coupe’s signature light signatures, while the profile reads like a stretched, more rugged interpretation of the coupe’s fastback. The grille remains controversial, but the taller stance and crossover proportions should soften opinions. It looks more at home here than it did on the low-slung coupe.

Don’t expect off-road bravado. This is an electric crossover first and a performance machine second. Expect a planted ride rather than a raised, go-anywhere SUV. The AMG badge signals that road manners — not ground clearance — will be the priority.

AMG did not simply borrow Mercedes-Benz’s mainstream EV bases. Frustrated with the limitations of MB.EA and MMA, AMG developed the AMG.EA platform to suit its appetite for power and chassis control. That bespoke approach underpins the GT 4-door Coupe and will carry over to the SUV, meaning high-voltage hardware and performance-focused packaging.

Technical specifics remain unofficial, but the clues are loud. The coupe uses an 800-volt system and a large battery pack, reported at about 106 kWh. Expect a similar architecture for the crossover. The coupe’s three axial flux motors deliver a combined 1,153 horsepower — a headline figure that will likely be enough for the SUV to make a statement without tipping into exotic, quad-motor territory.

Why not more motors? Development cost and brand focus matter. AMG is niche. Spending to create yet another ultra-rare variant only makes sense if it yields a clear performance or marketing edge. For now, the sensible path is to adapt the coupe’s hardware and tune it for SUV dynamics.

Those teaser images are intentionally coy: black covers, sliced views, and light signatures that reveal more by omission than by design. But they do enough. They tell us this will not be a timid halo project.
