Senna's European NSX Heads to Auction with History

There is a photograph that tells the story better than any specification sheet: Ayrton Senna, in jeans and a button-down, crouched over a bright red NSX, rinsing its wheel arches with the casual care of a man who understood machines the way others understand music.

The little red NSX with the big backstory

It’s chassis number T000233. It wore the plate SX-25-59 and wore Honda’s Formula Red like a uniform. But what turns this NSX from an attractive mid-1990s sports car into a headline-grabbing collectible is provenance. Honda gave three NSXs to Senna as a token of thanks while he raced for McLaren Honda. This particular car was reserved for his time in Europe and saw public roads in Portugal and beyond. It even appears in the 1992 documentary Ayrton Senna: Racing Is in My Blood.

This NSX, chassis T000233, is more than a collectible; it is a direct link to Senna's life away from the circuit.

The arrangement around the car was almost ceremonious. When Senna was not in Europe the NSX was kept in Lisbon and only handed over when he arrived in the country. How many miles he put on it? That remains unclear, but the car’s visuals and the documented sightings make its connection to Senna indisputable. There’s even the famous photo of him washing the front arches, a simple, human moment frozen in time.

After Senna’s death in 1994 the NSX moved through a small chain of private owners: it changed hands in 1995, 1997, 2009 and 2013, and was brought to Imola in 2019 to mark the 25th anniversary of Senna’s fatal accident, where Minardi founder Giancarlo Minardi drove it. The most recent ownership change occurred in 2024.

Now the current owner has consigned the car to RM Sotheby’s, which will offer it at the London Peninsula Auction on the last day of October. The lot comes with a warranty book, detailed Portuguese ownership records, and a copy of the original Honda fax that confirms Senna’s connection to the car — the paperwork that collectors crave when provenance is the story’s core.

Estimate? The auction house lists an expectation in the region of €580,000 to €928,000. If the market decides the Senna connection outweighs the car’s otherwise factory-standard status, this NSX will rank among the most expensive Hondas ever sold at public auction.

So what will a piece of Senna’s everyday life fetch in 2026? Will a collector prize the narrative as much as the metal and paint? We’ll know the answer when the gavel falls at the end of October. Until then the little red NSX waits, unassuming but heavy with history.
