Picture a family road trip where the car feels like a calm lounge rather than a cramped cabin. That is precisely the promise behind Xiaomi's latest automotive play: Sky Nomad.

Launched as a distinct sub-brand, Sky Nomad (official Chinese name Xiaomi Pengcheng) is Xiaomi's answer to buyers who want roomy, comfortable electric vehicles that still think long-haul. The company has already rolled out brand pages on WeChat and started citywide advertising in China. The first model to wear the badge is the N90, a full-size SUV that reads like a manifesto about space and range.

Room, range, and a pragmatic powertrain twist

The N90 measures 5.3 meters long and rides on a 3.1 meter wheelbase. It will be sold in five- and seven-seat layouts. Big on presence, the exterior mixes blocky, square headlights with a wide, trapezoid air intake. Up top sits a lidar sensor, and along the sides there are motorized running boards for easier entry. It looks like a modern take on the large family cruiser.

Under the skin Xiaomi chose an architectural choice that is increasingly familiar in the EV world: battery-first electric drive with an internal-combustion generator for long trips. The onboard generator is a 1.5 liter turbocharged petrol unit, but it does not drive the wheels. Its job is simple and focused: charge the battery and feed the electric motors when needed. Why add a petrol generator? Because it erases range anxiety without the weight and complexity of a big fuel tank and heavyweight hybrid driveline.

The battery pack is rated above 70 kilowatt-hours. In pure electric mode Xiaomi claims 400 to 500 kilometers of range. Add the generator and the combined cruising distance stretches past 1,500 kilometers, a number that changes how you plan cross-country drives. Short daily commutes on electrons, long escapes fueled by the generator.
