2028 BMW iX7 Spotted With Production Split Headlights

A prototype of BMW's first all-electric X7 was photographed at the Nurburgring, revealing split headlights, a new rear-light signature and details pointing to a 144-kWh iX7 60 xDrive due in fall 2027 as a 2028 model.

A lightly disguised prototype of BMW's first all-electric X7 has been photographed at the Nurburgring, revealing production-intent split headlights and a new rear-light signature ahead of a fall 2027 debut for the 2028 model year.

Exterior changes and prototype details

The prototype shows a rear lighting signature distinct from the iX5 and the outgoing internal-combustion X7. Stacked horizontal elements sit on either side of the liftgate, while closer inspection reveals two slim LED bars stacked vertically per side. Circular reflectors mounted low in the bumper appear to be non-production fixtures. As expected for an EV, there are no exhaust outlets and the bumper treatment is notably clean.

BMW has placed the rear wiper on the rear glass rather than hiding it under the roof spoiler, preserving an upright rear appearance similar to the ICE X7. The side profile remains conservative with substantial rear quarters, a relatively flat roofline and tall windows that reinforce three-row packaging. Multi-spoke wheels fill the arches; the large brake-rotor diameter seen on this prototype suggests it may be a dual-motor specification positioned below an M Performance variant.

Conventional door handles are absent; four winglet-style actuators are visible instead. Reports indicate Chinese safety authorities oppose this type of door-handle design.

Front-end layout and architecture

The iX7 adopts BMW's split-headlight arrangement similar to its inline-six and V8 siblings, with slim daytime-running lights in the upper corners and main headlamp units in separate lower housings. The kidney grille spans a significant portion of the nose and appears to use a different grille design than the iX5, despite visual similarities elsewhere.

BMW is developing the iX7 on an evolution of the Cluster Architecture. The model is expected to mirror at least some of the iX5 powertrain choices.

Powertrain, charging and production timing

Reported highlights for the iX7 60 xDrive (US specification) include a 144-kWh battery pack, an 800-volt electrical system, two drive units and 570 horsepower. BMW reports peak torque of up to 593 pound-feet (805 Newton-meters). Charging performance is expected to be strong on DC fast charging, in line with CLAR-based luxury SUVs that incorporate technology adapted from Neue Klasse models.

  • Battery: 144 kWh (US spec)
  • Electrical architecture: 800 volts
  • Output: two drive units, 570 hp
  • Peak torque: 593 lb-ft (805 Nm)

Reliable information indicates production will begin in September 2027, making the iX7 a 2028 model year vehicle in the United States. The next X7 and iX7 carry the internal codename G67; Alpina versions are codenamed G69. Introductory variants are understood to be the iX7 60 xDrive, X7 40 xDrive and the Alpina X7 60 xDrive.
