What the study actually did and why it matters

Researchers started with nearly 800 participants, none diagnosed with dementia. At an average age of 39 they had blood drawn for vitamin D measurements. About 16 years later, roughly 430 of those participants underwent brain PET scans to look for two classic Alzheimer’s markers: amyloid beta and tau proteins.

The headline finding: higher midlife vitamin D was associated with lower tau accumulation at follow-up. There was no meaningful relationship between vitamin D and amyloid in this group. Because the work is observational, it cannot prove vitamin D directly prevents tau buildup, but it does point to a plausible window for intervention—midlife, when risk factors are still adjustable.

Lead investigators note that previous trials of vitamin D supplementation in older adults did not show benefits for tau, but those studies targeted people already experiencing memory problems and were typically short-term. Put simply, waiting until the late stages may be too late.
