The benefits were largest for cardiovascular deaths, which fell by about 19 percent, and deaths from neurological disease, mostly linked to dementia, which fell by about 27 percent.

These findings come from observational cohorts, not randomized controlled trials, so they cannot prove cause and effect. People who do resistance training may also follow healthier diets, sleep better, or engage in other health-promoting behaviors. The researchers adjusted for many of these factors, including smoking and aerobic activity, but residual differences can remain. Exercise was self-reported, too, which means intensity, load, and exact routines were not captured.

Still, the consistency across decades of follow-up, large sample sizes, and strong statistical associations make a convincing case that adding even modest resistance work into a weekly routine is beneficial for population health.
